Kalimpong Gets First Digital FM Transmitter

Exciting news for artists in the hilly regions—new opportunities and support are on the way to showcase their talent and creativity.

West Bengal's picturesque town of Kalimpong is poised to receive a significant upgrade in its broadcasting infrastructure with the upcoming installation of a digital FM transmitter in Kalimpong,  part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationwide digital broadcasting initiative. The project, which is part of the centre's Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development programme, represents an investment of Rs 3.36 crore. The foundation stone for this crucial development is expected to be laid remotely by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the ceremony scheduled for January 19, as announced by Darjeeling BJP MP Raju Bista.

It was the dream project of Raju Bista

Bista highlighted the long-standing need for infrastructure improvements in the region's All India Radio (AIR) facilities. In his communication to Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur, Bista emphasised the importance of upgrading Prasar Bharati assets in Kalimpong to an FM broadcasting station. This upgrade is anticipated to significantly enhance the quality and reach of radio broadcasts in the area.

All India Radio Kalimpong

Radio, often regarded as the "voice of the masses," continues to be one of the most trusted and accessible mediums of communication in India, particularly in remote and hilly terrains such as Kalimpong. While digital platforms and social media have grown rapidly, radio remains a vital lifeline for communities, offering real-time news, weather updates, and cultural programming in local languages. The installation of this new FM transmitter ensures that Kalimpong will not be left behind in this digital broadcasting era.

Enhancements in Darjeeling and Kurseong

The Kalimpong upgrade is not an isolated development. In recent years, AIR Kurseong has also seen significant progress. Since December 2022, it has been designated as the National Hub for Nepali News Bulletins and Programmes in India. This elevation has given Akashvani Kurseong the unique opportunity to broadcast Nepali-language news and shows nationwide, reaching millions of Nepali-speaking listeners across the country.

The NEWS ON AIR mobile app has further amplified this reach by providing global access to Akashvani Kurseong’s Nepali programming, strengthening cultural ties among the Nepali diaspora and allowing communities worldwide to remain connected to their heritage.

Empowering Regional Identity and Local Talent

The Kalimpong transmitter is not merely a technological upgrade—it is also a tool for cultural preservation and identity empowerment. The hilly districts of North Bengal, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Kurseong, are home to a rich tapestry of traditions, languages, and folk art forms. However, these often remain underrepresented in mainstream media.

Platform for local musicians and storytellers

By enabling more accessible broadcasting, the new station will provide a platform for local musicians, storytellers, theatre groups, and folk performers in North Bengal. Traditional Nepali, Lepcha, and Bhutia cultural expressions could gain wider exposure, ensuring they are preserved for future generations while simultaneously offering local artists the recognition they deserve.

Employment through FM station

Moreover, in a region with high youth unemployment, the transmitter opens doors for media-related careers—from radio jockeys and sound engineers to journalists and production staff. This aligns with the government’s broader goal of linking cultural growth with economic empowerment.

A Vision for the Future: DD Gorkha Channel

Looking ahead, Raju Bista has also articulated a greater vision for the region’s media landscape. He expressed his desire to establish a DD Gorkha channel, which would provide dedicated programming relevant to the Gorkha community. This channel would not only promote the community’s culture, literature, and traditions but also strengthen its representation on a national stage.

Regional diversity and youth empowerment through media

The creation of such a platform would complement the FM initiatives, creating a multi-dimensional media presence that celebrates regional diversity. For young people in particular, this could be a source of inspiration and pride, fostering a deeper sense of belonging and cultural appreciation.

Government Commitment and Regional Development

The involvement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in laying the foundation stone highlights the national importance of the Kalimpong transmitter project. It is not just about installing equipment; it is about bridging gaps in communication infrastructure in remote areas that have historically been underserved.

Radio broadcasting for disaster management and public safety

Broadcasting infrastructure plays a critical role in emergency communication as well. In hilly regions prone to landslides, earthquakes, and heavy rainfall, the radio often becomes the first line of communication for warnings and disaster management. Thus, the new transmitter is also a step towards ensuring safety and resilience for the local population.

As Kalimpong prepares for this broadcasting leap, the expected benefits extend far beyond entertainment. Improved radio connectivity could support local tourism promotion, broadcasting programmes that showcase the town’s scenic beauty, handicrafts, and cultural festivals. Tourism is a major revenue source for Kalimpong, and wider promotional campaigns through FM broadcasting could attract more visitors, benefiting hotels, restaurants, and small businesses.

Educational radio programs for rural and remote learning

Education is another area that stands to gain. With enhanced radio services, educational programming in local languages can reach rural households, helping bridge the gap where internet penetration is still limited. This is especially crucial for students in remote areas, who often rely on public resources for learning materials.
